Tokyo International School (T.I.S.) was founded in 1994 by international parents who wanted to provide a child-centered education for their children. First, they opened the Children's House preschool (C.H.) and then in 1997 Tokyo International School, an elementary school, was added.
TIS Elementary school has the lowest Student/Teacher ratios in Tokyo Our Preschool has a maximum 6:1 student/teacher ratio. Our Elementary School has a maximum 15:1 student/teacher ratio.
These ratios allow for teachers to spend a great deal of individualized child centered time with each student. This additional time per student enables our teachers to maximize a child's academic potential, meet their areas of need and foster their passion for learning.
We understand the importance of a child's early years in school and believe a more individualized approach is a key element in making it a positive learning experience.
Our current student body of 210 students represents over 35 different nations, but English is the medium of communication. For C.H. Preschool, students may enter with no or limited English skills, but at least one parent must be a fluent English speaker. For our elementary school classes, we require that all students be fluent speakers of English with the skills to work comfortably in their grade.
For those students with limited English ability, ESL classes are offered for students who do not speak English or Japanese.
