Sony Digital Camera Repair Under Warranty

Bought a Sony digital camera from Tokyo last Nov (with 5% tax waiver agaisnt my passport); lately started to give major boot-up trouble. Need to send it Sony Japan service centre as HK won't honor warranty. My colleague in Tokyo is prepared to take it to Sony for me. Is it a simple matter to post-parcel or DHL it to Japan? Will my colleague have to pay duty on an ex-Japan-retail product sent for repair? Any advice? Thanks.
