Carefull Bugeting in Tokyo

Do you think I can bank most of my paycheck if I move to Tokyo as an expat? The company will pay all the rent, phone, heating ect. All schooling costs K-12, and some spending monies month, plus other considerations. . I have a family of six? My friends say do not go if you want to save any monies! My wife and I think we would be able to save up to 80% of my pay if we do not go overboard. Is this a pipe dream?

We saved a lot of money in Japan. I mean a lot. My wife and I were not on an expat deal and we had to pay our own way in everything. We both earned about the same income and gave ourselves an “allowance” of 100k each/month which was more than ample to pay for “entertainment” and lunch. We essentially saved one entire income and a small part of my income as well.

It’s easy to spend money in Tokyo but it’s also easy to save in my experience.

It depends on whether you have small children. Pre-schools are expensive.
