I've got a Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP car seat for my new born baby. I bought this one specifically b/c it can be used without its base, as I wanted to use it in taxis. However, the very first time we tried it in a taxi, we found a problem: we're supposed to pass the seat belt around the backrest of the car seat and slip the seat belt through the slot on the back of the car seat. HOWEVER, the taxi seat belt was not long enough to be passed around the back of the car seat. We called the Hong Kong sales agent of Peg Perego, but they said they'd never received this complaint before and suggested that we try it in another taxi as a taxi car made in a different year may have a longer seat belt. We just tried it again today, and it still didn't work.
We are just wondering whether anybody has tried to use a rear-facing infant car seat (either Peg Perego or some other brand) in a taxi in Hong Kong, and have you experienced similar problem?
You have to really stretch the seatbelt, and jiggle the seat a bit - so it is angled up when you put the seatbelt in, then press the baby seat back down.... hard to explain, but it does work.
i have never been able to install our infant carseat (not a peg perego one) as it should be in taxis due to the same problem. so i do what i can, the belt goes across, it's not long to go back as well.
the only time it's ever fitted the way it should was in the car driven by my sis-in-law...but she's got 3 kids so i don't know if she bought a car specifically for the belts to be long enough to install carseats.
I got a travel system for the same purpose and I've never been able to secure it properly in any of these taxis in HK. Their seat belts are just far too short. I've practically given up trying.
Ditto here. I ended up using the middle seat belt and passing it across the slots on the "armrests" of the carseat. Sometimes, I even had to wedge the carseat on the floor of the backseat of the taxi b/c the middle seat belt was missing or broken. I think that was actually the safest spot for the carseat as it was really wedged in b/w 2 seats!
Both our Graco Snugride (birth to 6 months) and our Britax Marathon (birth to 65lb) have worked fine in backward facing position in taxis. Attached exactly as per the manual.
Certainly true about the different seat belt lengths. Our baby carseat (Chicco brand) would not fit in a taxi without a struggle and the same went for my old car. Since changing to a larger car I have no problems. Still a struggle in taxi's though
