Posted by Mighty (191 days ago)
Here i go again, thinking may be this forum is more suitable.
Does anyone know any horse riding school besides Jockey Club's? Not to become a jockey but just for fun for my daughter. Tks.

Try Lo Wu Saddle Club, in Ho Sheung Heung, Sheung Shui. Tel 2673 0066 but the website is down for repair. They take children from age 5, I believe, for pony riding lessons.

Tks Taylor12, another member has posted a list of all the horse riding schools in Hong Kong. So give it a try. Thanks.

I think your best bet might be in Tuen Mun or Lei Yue Mun (jockey club's.) The Lo Wu Saddle Club is (sorry), crap. In addition to that, they're not BHS (British Horse Society) approved.

To each his own, I guess, but many children seem to enjoy riding there. Also, Lo Wu Saddle Club is now BHS approved.

I got my son in Lo Wu and we start this Sun. We are very excited. Could my son just wear jeans and runners for the first lesson? Not sure if I want to deck him out in new riding gear before I know whether my son will want to contnue.
L142sEnToSa - could you go into more details about your Lo Wu comment?

Yes Amanda, I remember that you are taking your son there. But did you say this November and now you can start early? (^-^).

Mighty I rang last week to put my son's name down on the waiting list but the receptionist looked through the books and there was an opening. They said 4 year old on leads can start this class...so I took the vacancy right away. Maybe give them a call to see if there are any more spots for your daughter (sun at 2pm).

Amanda, tks for your update. Currently I am not in Hong Kong but I hv put my daughter's name down for classes on leads in June. As usuall, I was told "on the WL". Will give them a call again in June. Do let me know how you get on this Sunday. Are you going to take the lead yourself? They said I need to pay a tip to the carer if I want them to lead but they didnt say how much. Of course, I want to do it myself but I have no expereince at all in handling horses.

I think it would be best if either myself or husband do it for the first time. however since we don't drive in Hk we are catching the train so making it a family day and visit the train musuem then horse riding...so since we made the effort, I think we will do it rather than a carer.
I don't know what to expect as I really have no experience too. I'll let you know how it goes.
June isn't that bad, it's this Sunday! My goodness times fly!

maybe it's not up yet.
but my friend has ridden at LWSC and jockey club before, and she said the way that they taught at LWSC was basically crap. She's been riding at jockey club ever since. Her main complaint was the the instructors were hindering her abilities to progree.
hope this helped.

Ah, your friends sounds quite an advanced rider to me. My daughter wl only be joining the pony class on leads. She shld be alright then (^-^). Tks for your reply anyway.

the instructors might have a good reason for holding her off. Maybe she didn't have the right technique. As with any student/teacher relationship...at times a student rider will find it hard to understand the viewpoint of a professional instructor.
However my son, like Mighty's daughter is joining the pony on lead class. I prefer to go slowly and so would any other parent who has a 4 year old sitting high up on a horse.
What made me decide LW stables is that there is a family atmosphere. We could of went anywhere but having heard really nice things about LW stables, I chose LW. A few weeks back I heard there was a BBQ for all at the stables. Laid back and friendly beats hands down every time with me.

today was our first lesson. 4 children and all first riders. My son was the youngest. He was taught to hold the rein properly and how to use it correctly. Though my husband was holding the lead, my son was in charge. He would kick to start and pull the rein to stop. My son was also taught how to stand up while on the stirrups and while riding. He looked adorable and was having the most enjoyable time.
The teacher was Andrew who was great. So cheerful and my son really liked him. We hired a helmet. Clothing was not proper equestrian attire but a pair of track pants, long sleeve t-shirt and boots. My son was comfortable and happy. I am buying him knee high riding boots before second lesson. We are trying Sat 3pm next week. There are more children around 4 so more suitable for him.
The other 3 children had a carer and I was told a tip of around $60 was the norm. The carers were so cheerful.
My husband said it was really fun for him too. Both hubbie and son loved the small horse allocated to us that lesson - Tosca.
all in all, a very good first lesson. We can't wait for the second one!

The school sounds promising to me. Although sometimes it depends on the instructor too, obviously you got a good one. And Amanda, how tall is your son? The tip sounds reasonable too. I thought of 100.- or more, thats good news. Does Andrew speak English all the time?

Andrew is English I believe. From what I saw on that day there was another teacher who was female and European. She taught more advance riders. But I am n ot sure about other days. The carers are chinese...well on Sunday they were. The carers are actually volunteering and as a non profit organization even giving $100 to them is ok. I heard that some carers are even 60 years old but do it as they love horses and children. On Sunday there was young and old carers.
I really like the atmosphere. Parents and children all greeting each other. I am glad I chose LW. Saturday's class is by Andrew too.
My son is 105cm...a shortie but a dare devil. The pony was a good match for him. Your daughter will not start on a horse but a pony...still it is a big thing. Come 15 mins earlier so your daughter can go see the horses in the stables. We bought Australian carrots for the horses and fed them. Then when it was time to meet the pony all was ok.
Does your daughter need a chinese teacher?

Hi Amanda, tks for the details and advice. In fact my daughter only understands English at the moment. Hope she will catch up with her chinese when we come back and stay in Hong Kong. I just assume Andrew is Chinese. English obviously suits my daughter. LW really sounds a great place to me. Carers sound great too. It wont be so nice if they just work for money, I guess, as the tip is not a lot. But if they love horses and children that is really FANTASTIC.
Oh yes even pony is a BIG thing.... my daughter is only just about 100cm and she is not a dare devil like your son (^-^). Anyway, I will give her the chance and let her see it herself.
How was the train museum? Disappointed? There isnt much to see, is there? I think only for those who had travelled in those old trains before (I used them everyday when I was a teen) wld enjoy seeing them again but you cant call there a museum, can you (^-^).
So how did you get to LW Centre? Taxi from Sheung Shui Station?

we ended having lunch at the jockey club country club so we did not go. We got a taxi from Sheng Shui as Lo Wu is in a restricted zone. Aparently there are buses and I have seen the bus stops nearby but too hot, too many insects and lazy. My son ended up sleeping for 2 hours. One good thing is he did not complain of a sore bottom.
