I have just found out I will be having a cesarian at Queen Mary this week.
Can anyone tell me if there is anything extra I should bring with me? I have all the standard lists and I've looked through old threads etc. and have everything pretty much packed.
Do I still need to bring bed mats and non adhesive maternity pads?
yep, you still need those things...but personally, i hated the non adhesive.... i much preferred using undies and the adhesive ones... the bed mats are to make sure you don't stain the sheets with lochia after the birth. you may find that you even use them at home for a while.
just a hint... when you're feeling "yucky" afterwards, dont be shy to ask the orderly ladies to help you clean up down there... they'll bring warm water and long tweezers with cotton to clean you up, until you can make it to the bathroom on your own.
Thanks Cara. I have actually bought the adhesive ones with a number of cheap undies to throw away later. I thought the non adhesive ones may have been used during birth (I haven't bought any yet). Do you think I can get away with only bringing adhesive pads to hospital? I'm not even sure how the non adhesive pads work!
About how long is it until you can get about on your own and use the bathroom? How long is the baby in the nursery - can I have the baby with me even if I can't get out of bed (i.e. still numb!)?
I bought adhesive pads, however when the orderly ladies cleaned me up early the next morning they used a non-adhesive pad that required an elastic "belt". Once I was able to go to the bathroom I used my own adhesive pads.
The nurses encourage you to get out of bed the next day after your catheter is removed (mid-morning). They assist you to a chair and it is a nice opportunity to sit up and spend time with your baby. You are also encourage to walk as soon as you feel as though you can. You can ask to have your baby by your bed. You will be restricted in your movements because of pain at your incision (rather than numbness). The orderlies are extremely helpful and you can call on them to assist you to move the baby to and from their cot especially if you are breastfeeding.
You will be given pain relief medication to self administer. I usually took the pain medication prior to making the trip to the bathroom for a shower to eleviate the pain.
